About Good Irrigation

Twenty years of water engineering, aimed at a much smaller problem.

Most garden irrigation is sold by people who know plants. Good Irrigation is built by someone who spent his career on water.

For more than 20 years, Simon has worked as a hydropower sustainability consultant, advising on water infrastructure projects across Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and beyond. That work is about the same thing at every scale: understanding how water actually moves through a system, under pressure, over time, and what happens when the rules governing it change.

Sussex's hosepipe bans are a much smaller version of a problem Simon has spent his career on: matching a water system to the rules that govern it, not just to what looks reasonable. Most irrigation installed in home gardens is designed for convenience — it was never checked against the actual wording water companies use to decide what's exempt from a ban. Good Irrigation exists to close that gap: proper water engineering, applied to something as ordinary as a garden border.

Good Irrigation operates as a sister company to The Good Gardener, the Brighton & Hove gardening business Simon also founded. Same local roots and the same standard of work — just a specialist focus on the one part of a garden that's now genuinely regulated.

Part of the Good Gardener family

The Good Gardener has been maintaining gardens across Brighton and Hove for years, working through a trusted network of subcontracted gardeners. Good Irrigation is its sister company — same standards, same local accountability.

A specialist focus on water

Irrigation is a different discipline from planting and mowing — it's about pressure, compliance, and infrastructure. Good Irrigation exists so that discipline gets a dedicated specialist, not a sideline.

Designed by gardeners, not plumbers

An irrigation installer knows pumps and pipework. We also know what plants actually need — how hedges behave, how newly planted shrubs differ from established borders, how pots dry out faster than beds. We design around your garden, not just the easiest way to run a pipe.
